Spotlighting Nikko Z’s respectable label Dopamine Music, is a pleasure as I get to partake two unsung heroes of Progressive House; Kobana teams up with Yane3dots and gives us a sweet as honey pack titled – “Drive”.
To say the original composition is glorious comes easy. This latest is stylish and filled with a different approach, when you get an earful of the rat-a-tat fearsome hybrid bass snaps, the steady throbbing center which morphs in to a looming slab of concrete dub Techno refurbished with a hypnotic vocal that snakes around here and there. It’s foggy, bleak and wonderful.
Progressive House specialist Silinder provides us with the first of the two remixes thrown in the EP. His take is by far lumbering, polished restraint of the original. He manages to sparingly sprinkle the tune with lo fi charm and a great break down section keeps you engrossed. The spiky bass line, and vocals makes this rework, more spooky and subliminal. The slightly woozy center and regimented repetitive quality of the remix, with the use of the staccato element pulls things off stunningly.
But what makes this pack good? Meet Canadian musician Navid Mehr, whose reinterpretation puts the percolating of dance back in to your senses. It’s that remix you would play over once again, at some point of the night; such is the quality of his work. Not to be fooled by the unassuming opening strains lead you in to a vat of supremely cut out dance beats, underneath which lay the now all too familiar vocalism, the melodic riff crashes about in a warmer more organic way. Dialing up the tempo and jacking the grooves up, Mehr’s rework is effortlessly clubby.
