There can be no dispute in the matter of the one and only musician truly pushing the boundaries of dance music, in recent times….behold Robert Mason!!
Canada has a new treasure of rare musicality, and this latest release from The Purr imprint, is different as they invite Mason’s magic to surround the EP, with a lone track that is further enhanced up by two very cutting edge remixes, that will stand the test of time.
Turning in to – “An Once of Bounce”, the original structure surprises as the track unfolds, paced by bubbling exotic percussion, nifty synthy insides and a stripped down textured vocalism. The track soon expands exponentially after a culling break down decides to get hold of your brains, from there on its Robert Mason’s constantly shifting rhythms that keep things interesting without relying on the predictable bass kick. There’s an unaffordable amount of rollick in this one that should appeal.
Getting to the first of the remixes L.A musician Saand takes hold of the tunes, in more ways than one. A fat bouncing bass bubble greets me full and strong. The swift reworking of the vocals and center melody line is full of finesse. This remix has the potential to be thrown in a big room and should sound exorbitantly lovely.
The finisher remix comes from Berlin DJ/Producer duo Not Usual, and they kinda put a Deep House spin on the proceedings and come up with a rock solid version that invites a variation to the pack. Present in this rework are oodles of chord pulses that one would associate with the style they both are known for. There’s a fair amount of condensed soulfulness as the vocals change up to a masculine, plaintive call. Plus, there’s enough bass goodness to wiggle on to, which makes this remix powerfully alluring.
But both versions do the original justice and should find welcome ears, even if they are unlikely bedfellows. Well done all around to everyone associated with the release, and to those who want to get their hands on it, keep your eyes peeled, the pack is out on the 14th of September.
