Nothing is ever boring or the same with Robert Babicz’s noble steerage at his very own imprint Babiczstyle and neither is the music he so lovingly creates for all of us to enjoy. Consistently fantastic and rather classy, his newest offering “Mercury Bells EP” speaks lush musical goodness.
The title track “Mercury Bells” comes in two versions, first up the original mix provides us with incredulous Vocalism that makes love to your ears, riding on muscular rhythms and balmy beats. The twisty melancholic bells and soothing strings, cling to the arresting bass line like creeping vines. A touch of acid lifts the energy up to do what you need to do on the floor the whole 9 minutes. The other Dub rework, leaves the vocals aside and presents itself as an instrumental piece, with all the beauteous components of the previous version intact and in it’s fold. An underground feel takes over, with the grooves aimed towards a darker end of the dance floor.
“Loli and the Snuggle” is the starkest underground Tech-Housey cut made from metallic beats and cavernous interiors that churn your brains for more. The ghostly pings and echoes are moody as well as melodic. The track shifts from acidic squelches to smooth bass with quick fire precision, a warm cascading melodic chord finds its place making things buttery good. This ones highly danceable, yet has an intensity that can help you spill your drink here and there without you even knowing it. Captivating fare!
Next up – “Purple Bender” sets out with a thick churlish bass line that mutates in to a monster truck of a riff, simultaneously euphoric and ominous. The picture of this track develops over the minutes with its tiny hooks and anxious underbody of dark textures splashed within. The one that crawls and gets under your skin, easily.
Closing the pack off is “Not Alone”, shows off less and swings around more. Uncluttered and building to a small climax, with shards of break beatish histrionics and melodic pulses. There are some crucial elements that pop in and out, such as the Piano bits held together with the brash drummy pattern that fools you in to not knowing, when the huge stabs of bass greet your aural senses. An impeccable way to sign off, no less!!
